The word Chakra is Sanskirt Indian and means wheel or Vortex. It was originally used to describe the wheels of Chariots in battle, which appeared to look like a disk of light or fire. Chakras are depicted as halos in some traditions, indicating proper balance and flow of all Chakra points. It is also used as a metaphor for the sun which gives us energy; our vital life force.
The seven Chakras correspond to the seven main nerve ganglia of the endocrine system. Each charka controls specific emotions and overall function of the associated gland. When a charka is out of balance or alignment, dysfunction to emotions and the corresponding endocrine gland occur.
Here is a brief description of the charka energy points and their corresponding function. Once you are familiar with them, try placing your hand on each point, allowing yourself to feel the energy and movement it offers.
Chakra One: The Root Chakra
Earth, Physical identity, oriented to self-preservation
Located at the base of the spine, this Chakra forms our foundation. It represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this Chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.
Chakra Two: Abdomen
Water, Emotional identity, oriented to self-gratification
The second charka is located in the abdomen about one inch below the navel. It is related to the element water, governs the pancreas and assists in function to the sexual organs, urinary tract, and the five vertebrate of the sacrum. This charka also controls the principal of taste. When this charka is flowing without blockage it will manifest in your creativity, friendliness, acceptance of others, and a feeling care and understanding for others.
Chakra Three - Solar Plexus
Fire, Ego identity, oriented to self-definition
This Chakra is known as the power Chakra, located in the solar plexus. It purposes is to control performance of the adrenal gland. This charka provides us with a feeling of personal power. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this Chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. When blocked, it will bring forth low self-esteem and self-worth.
Chakra Four - Heart

This Chakra is called the heart Chakra and is the middle Chakra in a system of seven. It is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, positive and negative polarity, ego and unity. A healthy fourth Chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, and expresses unconditional love.
Chakra Five: The Throat
Sound, Creative identity, oriented to self-expression
This is the Chakra located in the throat and governs over the thyroid and is thus related to communication and creativity. When properly opened this vibrational Charka allows one to express themselves easily and with proper intent.
Chakra Six: The Third Eye
Light, oriented to intuition, self-reflection, intuition,
The sixth Chakra is located in the central cavity of the brain. Its basis is the intuition, imagination and one's ability to see into other realms of thought. It allows us to perceive the higher zones and higher planes. Its element is light. Its endocrine gland is the pituitary. Open and balanced this Chakra allows telepathy and total psychic vision.
Chakra Seven: The Crown
Thought, Universal identity, oriented to self-knowledge, complete understanding and enlightenment.
Its basis is that of knowledge, information, understanding and refined thoughts. Its endocrine gland is the pineal. It is the governor of the energy of the spiritual body. Open and balanced with all the other Chakras, this energy allows freedom from the fear of death, the ability to manifest miracles, the love of God-realization. When blocked a person may become indecisive, depressed, or withdrawn. Negative thoughts and feelings will also hinder the function of this center.
